Overview of Computing and Multimedia Resources

Come and discover the wealth of computing and multimedia resources available at the Resource Centre. We will do a quick fly-by of the Windows and Mac computer labs, multimedia workstations (scanning, image, video and sound editing), mobile equipment available at the Circulation Desk (digital cameras, digital camcorders, laptops, projectors, SMARTBoards, digital voice recorders, the mobile sound studio, various accessories, etc.) and the DVD/VHS recording stations.

The SMARTBoard is an interactive whiteboard that is becoming increasingly popular in Ontario-based schools. This workshop will give you the opportunity to use a SMARTBoard as well as discover how this up and coming technology can be integrated into classrooms – no matter the subject!

The Digital Voice Recorder

Learn how to use this simple piece of technology to record a course, an interview, etc. We will discuss the various functions of the digital voice recorder, how to improve the sound quality in certain circumstances, the various microphones available, how to transfer the recordings to a computer or a USB key and finally the basics of transcription and audio editing.

The Scanner

Learn how to use the scanners in the multimedia workstations at the Resource Centre. You will try your hand at scanning text and images (and changing the settings if necessary) as well as how to insert the resulting image into a Word document, PowerPoint presentation or simply send it via e-mail.

PowerPoint* Presentations and the LCD Projector

Learn the do's and don'ts of PowerPoint presentations (fonts, font size, backgrounds, colors) and some design functions (templates, transitions, effects) as well as how to save your presentation (file formats, file size). You will also learn how to connect a projector and how to identify the keys to activate the projector on various laptop brands.

Introduction to the Digital Camera and Digital Photography

Come learn the basics of using a digital camera in this workshop (taking photos, adjusting the settings, transferring to the computer). We will also offer an introduction to the basic concepts of digital photography such as resolution, megapixels, image quality, image format, etc.

This workshop will give you a general overview of the various image editing and creation software (PhotoShop, FireWorks, GIMP) available on the Resource Centre computers as well as some general notions of framing, image size adjustments, special effects, contrast, etc. You will also learn how to integrate your final product into a Word document, a PowerPoint presentation or simply sending it via e-mail.

Capture videos and images from your screen with Jing

Have you ever wanted to capture an image or maybe a video clip from part of your computer screen? Now you can with the free software called Jing. Learn how this wonderful piece of software can assist you in creating tutorials with images and video for your classroom. You can even add text, arrows, frames and color to your captured images!

Discover from A to Z how to record, import, edit and export or burn a video project with Windows Movie Maker and Nero Vision on the Windows platform. Learn how to record a short video clip (or take an existing clip), how to import it into the computer and how to editing it with Windows Movie Maker (cut the clip, adjust the volume, add transitions between clips, change the order of the clips, etc.). Finally, you will learn how to export your completed video (different file types and sizes) or simply how to burn the final product to DVD using Nero Vision.

Website Creation

Together we will examine the basic concepts in website creation. This workshop will show you how to organize yourself before creating your website, how to devise a navigation scheme (links) between the various pages of your site, how to add images, sound and video and finally how to add your completed site to the internet or send it to your professor via e-mail. We will learn the basics of Adobe Dreamweaver and do a quick overview of the other website creation tools available to you.
