Quebec Sign Language immersion camp offered at the Faculty of Education
An important partnership
As a result of funding by the governments of Canada and Ontario as part of the Canada-Ontario Agreement relating to Additional Strategies to Enhance French Language Education by the Ministry of Education, the Faculty will offer, in partnership with the Centre Jules Léger, a Quebec Sign Language (LSQ) immersion camp at no cost to 21 elementary and secondary french language school teachers in July. LSQ has been recognized as a language of instruction by the Ontario Ministry of Education since 1993.
Shortage of qualified teachers
Hearing impaired children already face many challenges such as not always having the opportunity to communicate using Quebec Sign Language or to improve their literacy skills. The shortage of teachers qualified to teach the hearing impaired and able to communicate using Quebec Sign Language poses an additional challenge for these children.
Offered on the University of Ottawa campus
The immersion camp will be offered on the University of Ottawa campus from July 14 to 25. The 21 participants from the 12 French language school boards will be housed in campus residences during the camp.
Additional qualification in deafness
The participants that successfully complete the program this summer will be asked to participate at an intersession which will be held during the 2008-2009 school year. They will also be asked to attend another summer session in 2009. Subject to concurrence from the University of Ottawa , the three sessions will complete the necessary requirements for the courses LSQ 1, LSQ 2 and LSQ 3 which will lead to an additional qualification in deafness.
