The Career Development Program – SASS

This strongly recommended program is geared towards all students enrolled in the Teacher Education Program. It has been prepared by Career Services to provide you with theoretical and practical training in

  • assuring the quality of your resumé,
  • improving your interviewing and networking skills and
  • accessing resources.

This training program is broken down into three parts, and each part has a theoretical and practical component. Although you can choose when to complete each theoretical component, we ask that you respect the calendar of events for the practical components because they involve group work with other participants.

Middle-October – Resumés in theory and practice
November – Job interviews in theory and practice
December – Networking in theory and practice

It is important to be prepared before entering the work force, and this program requires a modest time investment as it provides you with a number of essential skills that you will find useful in your career search. In addition to the time needed to prepare for certain exercises and take part, you will need to reserve one hour in November for group work as part of the practical component of the program.

Pre-service teachers reflective practices on behaviour management

Stephanie Chitpin, Marielle Simon & James Galipeau

The most thoroughly prepared and well-designed lesson does not guarantee success if the instructor is not able to effectively manage the classroom and her students' behaviour. This presentation attempts to answer the following research question using a qualitative methodology: How can pre-service teachers use the objective knowledge growth framework based on the Popper's schema to deal with classroom?

L'école, c'est nous. (In French Only)

Refreshments will be served.

(In French Only)
Nicholas Ng-Fook, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education

Teaching Canadianness in the Adult ESL Classroom Trevor Gulliver, PhD. graduate student, Faculty of Education The government funded Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program has as part of its rationale to help “newcomers to become oriented to the Canadian way of life” (CIC, 2004) and in the long-term that participants will “identify with Canadian culture and ‘feel' like Canadians” (CIC, 2004). This rationale has resulted in some debate in TESL journals over the challenges to and possibilities of teaching culture and the understandings of culture implied in such a rationale. This presentation will discuss divergent notions of culture and their implications for pedagogy with particular reference to presentations of Canada, Canadians, and Canadianness in adult ESL textbooks.

Refreshments will be served.
