Profile

Richard Barwell's research focuses on language and discourse in mathematics
classrooms, particularly in multilingual settings. He has worked as a
teacher in Pakistan and the UK, and as a researcher in the UK, Canada and
South Africa, where he is visiting professor at the University of the
Witwatersrand and collaborates with Prof. Mamokgethi Setati of the
University of South Africa.

Richard is currently the primary investigator for the SSHRC-funded research project "Mathematics in a multilingual world: the socialization of second language learners of
mathematics". This project will examine how second language learners of
mathematics are socialised into both mathematics and language in different
settings, including, for example, ESL settings or immersion settings.
