Teacher Education Program (BEd)

About the program

The Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa is dedicated to the promotion, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the field of education in both official languages. The Faculty strives to support the development of qualified educators who are at once knowledgeable, skilled, and socially responsive. Our professionals are equipped with the necessary theoretical and practical skills needed to teach at any level of the province’s education system.

The Faculty of Education is committed to issues surrounding global and international education. Through its focus on teacher education, professional development and pedagogical research, the Faculty of Education ensures that its students are prepared for their leadership roles in the communities where they will live and work.

The Teacher Education Program, is a one-year full-time program, which prepares students to teach in elementary or secondary schools. It leads to a baccalaureate in education (BEd) granted by the University of Ottawa and to recommendation for certification by the Ontario College of Teachers valid in Ontario schools where English is the language of instruction. The Teacher Education Program prepares the students for a large variety of jobs. For example, the graduating students could work as professor, academic advisors, adult educator, training officer or instructor.

The program is divided into three divisions: primary/junior (kindergarten-grade 6), junior/intermediate (grades 4-10), and intermediate/senior (grades 7-12). In the primary/junior divisions, students have the opportunity to choose, following their admission, between two models of delivery: the on-campus model and the on-site model. The on-campus model appeals to those people who prefer a traditional university program with on-campus classes and two blocks of in-school practica whereas the on-site program is conducted predominantly in schools with students spending only short periods devoted to on-campus classes.

In addition, through its French as a second language (FSL) option, the Teacher Education Program offers the opportunity to qualify future teachers to practice in immersion schools. Through this option, students take some courses in French and others in English and their practicum take place in an immersion school, an intensive French class or in a basic French class.
