NTEP Certificate Program (for groups)

About the Program

General information

In July 1997, the Faculty began delivering a two-year community-based Native Teacher Education Program (NTEP) to candidates living in Native communities. The University of Ottawa now has two types of NTEPs: one leading to a certificate and the other to a baccalaureate of education. Graduates of both programs are eligible for recommendation to the Ontario College of Teachers for certification to teach in Ontario schools.

NTEP Certificate Program (for groups)

Under the criteria set forth in Ontario Regulation 184/97, the candidates must be of Native ancestry and hold the requirements for a secondary school graduation diploma or have standing that the Ontario College of teachers considers equivalent. The candidates for the Certificate program must also speak the native language of the participating communities and have some experience working or volunteering in classrooms.

The program is offered in partnership with Native communities and consists of work in the classroom of a mentor teacher, courses, and practice teaching. Courses are delivered through distance education (radio or telephone) and by face-to-face classes during the summer months in the sponsoring communities. Course work consists of the traditional 36-credit program and the possibility of three other courses in teaching English as a second language, teaching immersion in Native languages, and computers. The student teachers in this program have 60 days of practice teaching divided into three practica. The practice teaching sessions are supervised according to Faculty procedures by the Northern NTEP coordinators, the Faculty coordinator and other professors, all of which are qualified teachers.

Successful completion of the Native Teacher Education Program leads to certification by the Ontario College of teachers to teach in the primary and junior divisions (junior kindergarten to Grade 6). Graduates also receive a certificate from the University of Ottawa. Graduates of the University of Ottawa’s NTEP who submit proof of an undergraduate degree, including no less than 15 additional full courses or the equivalent, will also receive a baccalaureate in education degree.

Please note that the Native Teacher Education Program leading to a certificate is offered to groups of students only.
