About the Program
NTEP - BEd
The Native Teacher Education Program (NTEP) - BEd is a two-year community-based program that consists of coursework, practice teaching, and paid or voluntary work in the schools. Courses are offered in Ottawa during July and by distance education in the fall and winter. There are 60 days of supervised practice teaching divided into three four-week practica. These may be done in the home communities of the students and where Ontario curriculum is used. Students are expected to complete 60 h of either paid or voluntary work before beginning the first practicum and at least 60 h during the remainder of the program.
Successful completion of the NTEP leads to certification by the Ontario College of Teachers to teach in the primary and junior divisions in the province (JK – Gr. 6). Graduates who entered the program holding an undergraduate degree receive a baccalaureate in education. Graduates who entered the NTEP with a high school diploma or equivalent receive a certificate. Individuals graduating with a certificate, who provide the proof of an undergraduate degree from a recognized institution (including no less than 15 additional full courses or the equivalent) within 10 years of graduation, receive a baccalaureate in education from the University of Ottawa .
