Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is neither French nor English and who wish to be admitted to English-language graduate programs in the Faculty of Education, must provide proof of proficiency in English:

Applicants submitting a TOEFL score as proof of proficiency in English,

  1. must have a minimum score of at least 600 in the pencil and paper version of the TOEFL or 250 in the computer version, and a minimum TWE score of at least 5.0 to have their applications considered; and,
  2. must also submit other evidence that their proficiency in English is sufficient to pursue graduate work in English. Such evidence may include:
      • Successful completion of advanced third and fourth year university undergraduate courses in English;
      • Credible letters of references assessing their abilities in English; or,
      • Publications in English.

Applicants who have a TOEFL score between 600 and 640 will be required to successfully complete the course ESL 2361 Advanced Composition Skills for Second Language Learners during the first session of their program in addition to the courses of their regular or extended program. If they fail this course during their first session, they will need to successfully complete this course during their second session and will only be allowed to register for one course in their M.Ed., M.A. or Ph.D program during that session. With a second failure, they will be asked to withdraw from the program.

For candidates applying to the M.Ed. program, please be advised that under the above circumstances, an additional session may then be necessary to complete the program (four sessions for students in the regular program and five sessions for those in the extended program).
